SIU's SNAP and TANF Education and Training Programs help clients improve their work skills and assist them with finding and keeping meaningful employment.

The caseworkers are dedicated to placing clients with a worksite or job that matches their interests and strengths. Through training and onsite experience, clients will expand their skills and gain valuable experience.

During the program, participants may:

  • Complete Job Skills Training.
  • Learn how to complete job applications.
  • Create resumes.
  • Receive assistance with job searches.
  • Participate in mock interviews.
  • Obtain their GED or other certifications.
  • Be required to complete hours on a weekly basis at an assigned worksite.

The programs have a network of employers throughout Southern Illinois who can provide valuable work experience and possible future employment for clients. 

Are you eligible for this training program?

Program participants must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Receive SNAP or TANF benefits.
  • Reside in Franklin, Jackson, Saline, or Williamson County.
  • Attend orientation and appointments with caseworkers.
  • Be willing to complete required training and/or worksite hours.

How to apply?

For SNAP recipients, call 618.453.1447 to complete an over-the-phone intake assessment.

For TANF recipients, call your Illinois Department of Human Services caseworker to request a referral to SIU's SNAP or TANF E&T Programs.

If you are not receiving SNAP or TANF benefits, visit your local Illinois Department of Human Services office to learn more and request a referral to SIU's SNAP or TANF E&T Programs.

Possible supportive services include assistance with: 

  •  Transportation.
  • Work-related clothing.
  • Education and training support.
  • Personal hygiene and related products.
  • And other barriers that keep someone from working.
